TOPIC 3: HIGHLIGHTS FROM IPCC GOOD PRACTICE GUIDANCE

2. N2O Emissions

The methodology for estimating N2O emissions from livestock manure management can be summarized as follows:

  • Collect livestock population data by species and category (from single livestock characterization). The categories should reflect the amount of manure produced per animal as well as the manner in which the manure is handled.
  • Determination of the annual average nitrogen excretion rate per head (Nex) for each animal species/category (T),
  • Determination of the fraction of the total annual excretion for each livestock species/category that is managed with each manure management system type (MS),
  • Determination or choice of N2O emission factors for each manure management system type.
