TOPIC 3: HIGHLIGHTS FROM IPCC GOOD PRACTICE GUIDANCE

G. CH4 Emissions from Rice Production

The IPCC method for estimating methane emissions from rice production is based on the use of annual statistics for harvested areas and area-based seasonally integrated emission factors. In its most simple form, the IPCC method can be implemented using national activity data (i.e., national total area harvested) and a single emission factor.

The IPCC method can be modified to account for the variability in growing conditions by disaggregating national total harvested area into smaller area-units (e.g., harvested areas under different water management regimes) and multiplying the harvested area for each area-unit by an emission factor that is representative of the prevailing conditions at this area-unit.
