Agriculture Sector Source Categories and Gases


As shown in Table 1, agricultural activities contribute to emissions of greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, and N2O) and the troposphere ozone precursors that act as indirect greenhouse gases (CO, NOX, and NMVOC). This module will focus on emissions of greenhouse gases from these activities (i.e. CH4 and N2O).

* In keeping with the technical changes to the reporting guidelines and the CRF as a result of the LULUCF tables adopted at COP 9, Parties are no longer given the flexibility to report CO2 emissions from agricultural soils under the Agriculture Sector. Instead, these emissions are to be reported under the Land Use Change and Forestry Sector.

** There is no IPCC methodology to estimate CH4 emissions from agricultural soils.
