You should be familiar with the decision trees for livestock characterization (Figure 4.1) and the decision trees for enteric fermentation and manure management (see Figure 4.2, Figure 4.3, and Figure 4.4 in the IPCC Good Practice Guidance).

The use of a basic characterization and a Tier 1 method to estimate emissions for a “significant” animal species from a key category may be justified in cases where a Party lacks the necessary information. However, the Party should also demonstrate that it is taking steps to collect the necessary information for future inventories. For dairy cattle, milk production should be used to estimate emission factors even if only a Tier 1 method is used.
