TOPIC 3: HIGHLIGHTS FROM IPCC GOOD PRACTICE GUIDANCE

b. Enhanced characterization
For an enhanced livestock characterization, Parties must collect, in addition to the information needed for the single characterization, the following:

  • Disaggregation of livestock into sub-categories reflecting country-specific variations in age and sex structure and animal performance (animal or feed characteristics);
  • Livestock population by sub-category;
  • Feed intake estimates for a typical animal in each sub-category (used in the calculation of Tier 2 emission factors for CH4 from enteric fermentation for cattle, buffalo, and sheep, and CH4 from Manure Management).

The estimates of feed intake used to estimate CH4 from enteric fermentation should be consistent to the estimated manure and nitrogen excretion rates that are used to estimate CH4 and N2O emissions from manure management and direct and indirect N2O agricultural soil emissions.
