TOPIC 3: HIGHLIGHTS FROM IPCC GOOD PRACTICE GUIDANCE

The decision tree for estimating emissions from manure management outlines the steps that Parties should follow  Figure 4.3 in the IPCC Good Practice Guidance.

The main features of this decision tree are:

  • If there is no domestic animal production in the country, Parties should report “not occurring” (NO)
  • The Party should use an enhanced livestock characterization for those species that are significant (normally cattle, buffalo, swine), and a Tier 1 should only be used if all possible avenues to use a Tier 2 have been exhausted. The Party should use a Tier 2 method, provided the Party has the necessary data.
  • For animal species defined as “not-significant” (normally sheep, goats, horses, mules, asses, camels, poultry, and other species), it is acceptable to use a basic livestock characterization and a Tier 1 method, if no country-specific emission factors are available.
